Fatherhood in Focus
Fatherhood in Focus by The Modern Fatherhood Club is the podcast for new dads, expectant fathers and modern men who want to prepare for fatherhood, not just react to it.
Hosted by Aidan O'Driscoll, father of two, speaker and founder of The Modern Fatherhood Club, this podcast exists for the dad who is doing everything he is supposed to do, but still feels stretched, distracted, under pressure or unsure where he fits.
Modern fatherhood has changed. Preparation hasn’t.
Today’s dads are expected to be present, supportive, emotionally steady, ambitious, involved at home and still able to provide. But too many men enter fatherhood without the tools, language or support to navigate the mental, emotional and practical weight of becoming a dad.
This is not fluffy parenting advice.
This is fatherhood preparation.
Each episode brings honest reflection, real stories and practical tools to help you become the father your children need and the man your family deserves.
We talk about the things many dads carry but rarely say out loud:
- The pressure to provide without becoming absent.
- The identity shift that happens when life is no longer just about you.
- The mental load, burnout and emotional strain that can build beneath the surface.
- The relationship tension that appears when you are trying to hold everything together.
- The importance of presence, patience, confidence, resilience and connection.
- The role you play in shaping how your children feel, grow and remember their childhood.
The Modern Fatherhood Club exists to help fathers prepare, grow and thrive through honest conversations, practical education, community, free resources, The Ultimate New Dad Toolkit and programmes designed to support men through one of life’s most important transitions.
Because your kids do not need a perfect dad.
They need a prepared one.
Subscribe to Fatherhood in Focus and start building the clarity, confidence and connection you need to lead your family well.
The father you become shapes the childhood they remember.

Most men think fatherhood starts in the delivery room.
It doesn’t.
It starts now. It's in how you think, how you manage pressure, and how you show up when no one’s watching.
Because if you don’t deal with what’s going on inside your world…
Fatherhood will expose it.
This is what we're focusing on in this episode
Why fatherhood is an identity shift not just a life event
The hidden pressure dads carry before baby arrives
How burnout actually begins before birth
Why most men lose control when they become dads
The Circle of Influence tool for managing stress and focus
How to define the kind of father you want to be
The habits that will either support or break you
Why It Matters to You as a Dad
This is the turning point in the series.
Up to now, you’ve been preparing for pregnancy.
From here on… you’re preparing for fatherhood.
And if you don’t get clear on who you are and how you handle pressure…
You won’t just struggle.
You’ll drift.
Into stress.
Into frustration.
Into survival mode.
And your family will feel it.
This is where you can step up
Audit your habits (sleep, stress, alcohol, work patterns)
Use the Circle of Influence to reduce mental overload
Start having honest conversations about pressure
Define the kind of dad you actually want to be
Make one small change today that improves how you show up
If this hit home, don’t stop here.
Episode 7 made it real, emotionally and practically.
This episode shifts everything inward.
This is where you stop preparing for pregnancy…
And start preparing yourself.
Next episode: we move into labour and birth — where your preparation gets tested in real time.

No one talks about this part of fatherhood.
The paperwork.
The deadlines.
The responsibilities that don’t feel urgent… until they are.
And when you’re sleep-deprived with a newborn?
This is the stuff that catches you out.
This is what we're focusing on in this episode
How to legally register your baby’s birth in the UK
The 42-day deadline most dads don’t plan for
What documents you actually need (before the chaos hits)
How Child Benefit works and why it matters long-term
The hidden admin pressure placed on mums after birth
Why taking ownership here builds trust and reduces stress
How small actions now create stability later
Why It Matters to You as a Dad
This isn’t about forms.
It’s about leadership.
Because while your partner is recovering, exhausted, and adjusting to motherhood…
You have a choice:
Step up and take control or leave it until it becomes a problem
And the dads who get this right early?
They remove pressure.
They build trust.
They create stability.
That’s what real support looks like.
This is where you can step up
Learn the birth registration process now (not after)
Gather documents before the baby arrives
Understand Child Benefit — even if you might repay it
Take ownership of admin so your partner doesn’t have to
Be the one who says: “I’ve got this covered.”
If this hit home, don’t stop here.
Episode 8 challenged who you’re becoming as a dad.
This episode shows how that mindset turns into action.
Next episode: What actually happens when baby arrives — sleep, pressure, and relationship shifts.
Episode 1: Fatherhood Starts Before Birth (Most Men Miss This)

Everyone prepares for the baby.
Almost no one prepares for the financial pressure that comes with it.
And that’s what catches couples out.
Because when income drops…
Costs rise…
And sleep disappears…
Small money problems turn into big relationship problems.
This is what we're focusing on in this episode
What paternity leave actually looks like in the UK
How maternity pay really drops over time (and why it shocks couples)
The financial “gap” most dads don’t plan for
Why money stress turns into tension, blame, and arguments
How to plan ahead without overcomplicating it
Protecting your time at home during paternity leave
Real-life pressure points (feeding struggles, recovery, emotional load)
Why It Matters to You as a Dad
This isn’t about spreadsheets.
It’s about stability.
Because when your partner is recovering…
When emotions are high…
When things don’t go to plan…
The last thing you need is financial uncertainty.
This is where leadership shows up early
This is where trust is built (or broken)
This is where you either feel in control… or overwhelmed
This is where you can step up
Understand your paternity leave and pay (don’t assume)
Map your partner’s maternity pay drop across months
Calculate your financial gap before the baby arrives
Have honest conversations about money early
Protect your time at home; be present, not distracted
If this hit home, don’t stop here.

No one prepares you for this part.
Not the nappies.
Not the sleepless nights.
The cost of childcare.
Because for many families…
It’s not just expensive.
It changes everything.

How childcare decisions shape long-term family life
What most couples don’t talk about early enough

This is the stage everyone calls “the easy bit.”
The sickness fades.
Energy comes back.
The bump grows.
And for the first time…
It actually feels real.
But here’s what no one tells you:
This is where it gets real.
The countdown has started.
Your partner is exhausted.
Sleep is broken.
And suddenly… fatherhood doesn’t feel far away anymore.
These final weeks?
They matter more than you think.
This is what we're focusing on in this episode
What actually happens during the third trimester (weeks 29–40)
The physical and emotional pressure your partner is under
Why this stage is often underestimated by dads
The “nesting phase” and what really matters (vs what doesn’t)
Common symptoms and how to support her properly
The practical things you should be doing right now
How to become her anchor before labour begins
Why It Matters to You as a Dad
This isn’t just the end of pregnancy.
It’s the start of your leadership.
Because in these final weeks:
Her energy drops
Her stress can rise
Her confidence needs protecting
And your role?
To step forward.
To remove pressure.
To take control of what you can.
To show her she’s not doing this alone.
This is where you can step up
Take ownership of final prep (crib, hospital bag, essentials)
Handle daily tasks without being asked
Stay aware of her physical and emotional changes
Filter out noise (especially social media pressure)
Be calm, consistent, and present every single day
If this hit home, don’t stop here.
Episode 11 was about long-term pressure and decisions.

It always starts the same way.
“I think it’s time.”
And in that moment…
You either feel ready or completely exposed.
Because when labour starts, there’s no time to think.
Only time to act.
This is what we're focusing on in this episode
When to pack your hospital bag (and why most dads leave it too late)
What your partner actually needs during labour
What to pack for your baby (and what people forget)
What YOU need... because you’ll be there for hours
How to stay calm when things move quickly
The role you play on the day beyond just “being there”
Common mistakes that create unnecessary stress
Why It Matters to You as a Dad
This isn’t about a bag.
It’s about control in a moment where everything feels unpredictable.
Because when labour starts:
Emotions are high
Decisions happen quickly
Your partner needs stability
And if you’re scrambling around looking for things?
You’re not supporting her.

Labour isn’t something you watch.
It’s something you step into.
Because when the moment comes…

Just responsibility.
This is what we're focusing on in this episode
What the first few weeks with a newborn really feel like
Why babies seem impossible to “figure out”
The 4 everyday challenges that catch dads off guard
How to handle sleep, crying, and feeding struggles
Supporting your partner when emotions are high
The “divide & protect” system that stabilises your home
What actually matters in the early days
Why It Matters to You as a Dad
Because this is where most dads start to doubt themselves.
You feel useless
You feel behind
You feel like you’re getting it wrong
But here’s the truth:
This phase isn’t about perfection.
It’s about presence.
And how you show up here…
Shapes your partner’s recovery
Builds trust in your relationship
Sets the tone for your family dynamic
This is where you can step up
Focus on calm not control
Support your partner emotionally first, practically second
Take ownership of the environment around mum and baby
Use the “divide & protect” system
Stay present even when nothing seems to work
If this hit home, don’t stop here.
Episode 15 was about showing up in labour.

The baby’s home.
The messages slow down.
The help disappears.
And suddenly it’s just you… your partner… and reality.
The baby’s here.
Everyone’s focused on the newborn…
But what about her?
Because after birth, something shifts.
Emotionally.
Mentally.
Physically.
And if you’re not paying attention you can miss it.
What This Episode Covers
The difference between baby blues and postnatal depression
Why postpartum mental health often goes unnoticed
How to recognise the early signs
The mistake most dads make (trying to fix instead of listen)
How to support your partner without overwhelming her
Why your own mental health matters too
Why It Matters to you as a dad
Because this is one of the most important and most overlooked parts of early fatherhood.
If you don’t understand this phase:
You misread what she’s going through
You default to problem-solving
She feels alone
But if you get this right:
You become her safe space
You strengthen your relationship under pressure
You create emotional stability for your family
This is where you can step up
Listen without trying to fix everything
Learn the difference between baby blues and something deeper
Protect her recovery — physically and emotionally
Encourage connection with support networks
Stay aware of your own mental state
This is Episode 18: the final episode of the antenatal + early fatherhood series.
